Overview
The 500L: A Different Animal Entirely

Critical: The 500L is NOT a variant of the Fiat 500. It's a completely different car built on the Punto platform. When it launched in 2012, Fiat stretched the Punto into a tall, boxy MPV and put a 500 badge on it for marketing appeal. The strategy worked—the 500L sold well as a practical, affordable family car. But make no mistake: this is a Punto with more headroom, not a scaled-up city car.

Space Compared to the Standard 500

The 500L is 60cm longer (4.2m vs 3.6m) and 17cm wider than the 500 hatchback. Inside, rear legroom is abundant—adults can sit comfortably for long journeys. The boot starts at 400 litres and swells to 1,480 litres with seats folded. This is genuinely family-car space.

Engine Options

1.4 Petrol (95 bhp) — Simple, torquey, and reliable. Urban favorite. Not quick, but adequate for everyday driving. 42-50 mpg.

1.3 Multijet Diesel (85 bhp) — Fiat's proven 1.3 diesel. Brilliant for high-mileage use. 47-62 mpg. Lower road tax. Solid resale value.

1.6 Multijet Diesel (120 bhp) — More power than the 1.3. Suitable for towing (up to 1,200 kg braked). Still economical. Best for families planning motorway use.

MPW Variant (7-Seat)

The 500L MPW (Multi-Purpose Wagon) adds a third row of seats in the boot area, accommodating 7 passengers total. Rear-most seats are cramped for adults but fine for children on short trips. You lose boot space when all seats are in use (rear two seats fold flat when not needed). The MPW is a clever solution for growing families seeking minimal cost premium over the 5-seat version.

FAQs
Common Questions & Buying Advice
Is the 500L really a '500'?
Not technically. It's a Punto with a 500 badge for marketing. Built on Punto platform, identical mechanicals to Punto of that era. However, it's styled differently and marketed exclusively as a 500. Confusingly, it shares no parts or architecture with the actual 500 hatchback. If you love the 500 hatchback's nimbleness, the 500L will disappoint—it's slower, taller, and less engaging. If you need a family hauler with the 500 name, it's brilliant.
Is the 500L big enough for a family?
Absolutely. Rear headroom and legroom match a VW Touran or Ford Galaxy. Four adults travel comfortably. The 400-litre boot handles family holidays easily (seats down: 1,480L for large furniture). MPW version adds a third row—squeezy but functional for kids. This is a proper family car, not a compromise.
How reliable is the 500L?
Generally reliable. The 1.3 Multijet diesel is Fiat's proven workhorse used across many models—excellent for high-mileage owners. The 1.4 petrol is simple and honest. Avoid Dualogic automatics (pre-2016)—jerky and unreliable; stick with manual. Engines typically last beyond 150,000 miles with regular servicing. Common issues: rear brake wear (balance design), window switch failures on early cars, occasional electrical gremlins. Full service history is essential.
Why was the 500L discontinued?
Fiat repositioned. The crossover market exploded (consumers wanted SUV styling over MPV practicality). The 500L's boxy shape looked dated by 2020. The 500X crossover ate its lunch by offering trendy SUV looks at similar price. Fiat axed the 500L to simplify the range. Used 500Ls are now excellent value—family cars at budget prices.
Can I tow with a 500L?
The 1.6 diesel can tow up to 1,200 kg braked. The 1.3 diesel is rated for ~1,000 kg. The petrol is not rated for towing. Check the V5 for towing capacity (legally binding). If towing is essential, hunt for a 1.6 diesel. Unlike the 500 hatchback, the 500L is genuinely suitable for light caravan or boat trailer towing.
Is a used 500L good value?
Exceptional value. A 2014-2018 500L with 80,000 miles costs £6,000-9,000 and will seat 5 adults comfortably, tow a caravan, and reliably hit 150,000+ miles with servicing. A new equivalent from competitors (VW Touran, Ford Galaxy) would cost £15,000+. If practicality matters more than prestige, the 500L is one of the UK's best second-hand family car bargains.
